Alexander Kashin, a disabled man who on Tuesday started a hunger strike after failing for ten years to receive a monetary compensation from the former U.S. Consul General in Vladivostok, has refused to accept $100,000 payment from the US State Department and continues his ‘water-only’ protest.

Unemployment and poverty has decreased in the region, Primorye’s Governor Sergei Darkin pompously announced in his annual report Tuesday, revealing later that 18 percent of the region’s residents still live in meager conditions compared to those who may enjoy the average monthly salary of 13,200 rubles ($540).

The Russian Far Eastern Research and Fishing Council at a recent meeting in Vladivostok recommended a complete halt of authorized crab catching in the country’s Far East, thus exposing illegal crabs appearing in neighboring Asian fish markets.

Unknown intruders on Tuesday robbed a shopping mall in Vladivostok, making off with an estimated sum of 10 million rubles ($408,100), police said.

Crime watch Crab poaching captain sentenced to 2 years

A Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky court on Wednesday sentenced the captain of a crab poaching vessel which sank after being chased by border guards to two years in a colony-settlement, a minimum security prison in Russia.

Alexander Kashin Primorye resident Alexander Kashin, who was partially paralyzed in a car accident which involved former U.S. Consul General to the Russian Far East Douglas Kent in Vladivostok in 1998, went on a hunger-strike Monday as a ‘protest against the disregard of law by U.S. authorities’. For ten years, Kashin has been unsuccessful in trying to receive monetary compensation from Kent.

An Amur tiger killed and ate a Far Eastern leopard in an encounter in Primorye’s Khasansky County which environmentalists attribute to a ‘lack of food’, a press statement from the Far Eastern branch of Russia’s WWF (World Wildlife Fund) reported February 15.
