Toxic scallops seized in Vladivostok

The Vladivostok News

Experts from Russia’s agricultural watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor detained four tons of canned scallops from China at the Vladivostok port on Thursday saying the cargo contained toxic elements.

The inspectors of Primorye’s department of Rosselkhoznadzor revealed that the canned scallops contained three times the allowable norm of cadmium. The cadmium content amounted to six milligrams per one kilogram, while the norm is no more than two milligrams per kilogram. Cadmium is a toxic chemical known to cause cancer.

The cargo of canned scallops was imported from China to Vladivostok by the Moscow-based company Atardo and was intended to be sold in Moscow, the statement said.

Scallop, as well as other kinds of shellfish, is known to accumulate in its body heavy metals and other toxic components from sea water.

According to the statement, the seized cargo will be either disposed of or sent back to the exporter, the statement reported.
