Expelled student attempts to rob bank for food

The Vladivostok News

A young man was detained in Vladivostok early on Thursday as he was trying to rob one of Sberbank’s offices in Vladivostok.

At about 2.30 a.m. local time, the alarm system of a Sberbank branch on Uborevich Street sounded and a police patrol was dispatched to check out the situation, a press service for Primorye’s police reported.

At the scene, police officers detained a 17-year-old man with several plumbing tools in his hands. He broke two windows but failed to get inside because of the metal security bars.

During the interrogation, the man admitted he attempted to rob the bank in order to get some money for food, the statement said.

The man, a resident of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, used to be a student of a marine college in Vladivostok but was expelled from the college for bad grades. The detained man said he had no means to support himself.

Police are investigating the case. If criminally charged, he may face a punishment of one to three years in prison for attempted robbery and damage of property.
