On March 7 Vladivostok prosecutors ruled that former Vladivostok Mayor Vladimir Nikolayev must pay 13 million rubles ($541,667) in damages to the city’s budget after the court found him guilty of abuse of power. On the same day, the race for the city’s highest position was announced open.

In a customary rescue operation occurring annually during spring ice melting, Sakhalin emergency services rescued 755 anglers stranded on a drifting ice sheet in the Bay of Mordvinova on Sunday.

85 transport vehicles and about 250 people are currently involved in extinguishing massive steppe fires burning in the Russian Far East region of Khabarovsk, a statement from the region’s Department for Emergency Situations reported Tuesday.
