Baby, woman killer gets 24 years

On April 4 the Primorsky regional court sentenced an Uzbekistan citizen to 24 years and nine months in prison for the brutal murder of a Vladivostok woman and her 10-month-old granddaughter which he committed in order to rob the apartment.

The investigation revealed that in October 2006, Sobirzhon Omonov made repairs in the woman’s apartment and received full payment for his services.

In December 2006, he came to the woman’s apartment again, this time with plans to commit robbery. Omonov killed the woman who let him in her apartment and proceeded to kill the baby who was also in the room. He managed to steal 10,000 rubles ($417).

During the investigation and the trial, Omonov admitted to the murder and pleaded guilty, the statement said.

According to the verdict, Omonov will spend the first eight years in prison and the remaining period in a strict regime colony.

Man killed in rape attempt, woman gets six months suspended

A resident of Birobidzhan, Russia’s Jewish Autonomous Region, has been sentenced to a suspended six months imprisonment for killing the man who attempted to rape her, a statement from the region’s Prosecutor’s Office reported Monday.

The 22-year-old woman, whose name is not disclosed, hit her acquaintance on the head with a crowbar nine times while defending herself during a rape attempt. The attacker died of skull and brain injuries, the statement said.

The court ruled that the woman exceeded the limits of allowable self-defense and convicted her to a suspended sentence of six months imprisonment, the statement said.
