Russian, Chinese students spar in Vladivostok, 8 injured

The Vladivostok News

About 40 Russian and Chinese students exchanged blows in a massive clash near Vladivostok’s State University of Economics and Services (VSUES) on Tuesday with eight of the participants receiving various injuries.

The skirmish occurred at about 01:30 p.m. when verbal insults between Russian students of VSUES and Chinese students of the Far Eastern Technical University escalated into a brawl, with a few people whipping out knives.

During the fight, two Russian and two Chinese students received stab and cut wounds and another four received minor physical injuries. Three of them were later taken to the hospital and their conditions are reported as satisfactory.

The university’s security guards called the police who promptly arrived at the scene and managed to detain the most aggressive participants.

Police have launched a criminal case into the incident classifying it as ‘hooliganism’.

Prosecutors and police urged the instructors of both universities to lecture students to prevent such extremism from happening again.

Police did not elaborate as to whether the Russian or Chinese students initiated the fight.
