Explosives found in Vladivostok park

Combined reports

Workers digging in a recreational park in Vladivostok on Wednesday found 48 military shells which most likely have remained buried in the ground since the times of World War II.

The shells were discovered in the park called Minny Gorodok, in translation meaning “Mine Town” thus giving evident proof to the park’s name.

The police cordoned the area and called explosive technicians, a statement from Primorye’s Inner Affairs Department reported. The explosives were removed from the ground and discharged at a specialized military field.

According to specialists, the shells have remained since the war when the place was directly used as a military ammunition depot.

In a separate military incident on Tuesday, an officer was crushed by a tank in a military unit in the village of Barabash, Khasansky County in southern Primorye.

The officer was run over by the tank but the details of the incident have not been disclosed so far. Investigators are working at the scene.
