Fires gut Amur villages

Combined reports

An enormous blaze raged through the village of Yekaterinoslavka in the Amur region on Sunday killing one man and leaving 124 residents homeless.

The fire started at 2:45 p.m. local time and swiftly spread across the village due to strong winds, firefighters said. Thirty five residential houses were ruined by the blaze. 124 people, including 18 children and 56 women, were left without shelter. A disabled 59-year-old man could not escape his burning house and was killed by the fire, a local information agency, Amur Info, reported.

The victims of the fire were given accommodations at a local college and a sporting complex and provided with food. Psychologists are working with the people while local authorities are considering allotting monetary compensations.

The firefighters finally managed to completely extinguish the fire during the night. A special commission is investigating the cause of the fire.
