Disabled children starve in Jewish region

The Vladivostok News

161 children residing in the Valdgeimsky home for disabled children in the Jewish Autonomous region suffer from malnutrition since the regional financing for one child is a meager 45 rubles ($2) per day.

The $2 sum allotted for food is not enough to provide even half of the required nourishment for children, the results of the inspection conducted by the regional prosecutors revealed. The disabled children do not receive dairy and meat products, fish, fruits, juices and many other products, the press statement from the prosecutors said.

According to the statement posted on May 6, the prosecutors intend to force the responsible regional bodies to improve the situation with financing of homes for disabled children. During the raids in all of these institutions, prosecutors uncovered more than 60 law violations concerning the rights of the children.

It was not reported in the statement about the situation regarding medical treatment for children who require special attention daily. Considering the fact that the nourishment is extremely lacking, a disturbing question arises: what are the children actually eating and what kind of medical assistance are they receiving for $2 a day?

As of March 1, 2008 there are 858 disabled children living in the territory of the Jewish Autonomous region.
