2 Russian sailors die on board after Shanghai visit

Combined reports

Two crew members of a Russian cargo ship died on Sunday and one was hospitalized the following day after allegedly consuming tainted alcohol which they bought during the ship’s call at the Chinese port of Shanghai. The vessel is heading to the Far Eastern port of Nakhodka for an investigation.

The vessel Ivan Strod, with its port of entry in Tiksi and owned by the Arctic Shipping Company, was traveling from China to Japan when two crew members, machinist-electrician Gennady Rakhmanin and mechanic Yuri Yain, suddenly died on board after unshipping cargo in the Chinese port of Shanghai.

The sailors allegedly died of poisoning after consuming alcohol purchased in Shanghai, Ria Novosti news agency said citing a representative of the Arctic Shipping Company. According to preliminary information, the alcohol may have been tainted, the agency reported.

Another member with symptoms of poisoning had to be urgently rushed to the hospital in South Korea, The Vladivostok reported.

The Arctic Shipping Company’s representative office in Vladivostok has confirmed that there are Primorye natives among the ship’s crew but refused to release any other information, the newspaper said.

According to Vladivostok’s Marine coordinating center, the Ivan Strod is scheduled to arrive in Nakhodka on Thursday. Upon arrival, transport Prosecutor’s Office will launch an investigation into the incident.
