October 01, 2008Nikolay Drozdov: if cedar is preserved the tiger will be in safetyEvery year since 2000 on the 28th of September Vladivostok celebrates the Tiger’s day and this holiday is already considered to be the traditional Vladivostok event. The creator of the holiday is Vladimir Troinin, an outstanding scientist of local history. Later the ecological fund “Phoenix”, WWF, Greenpeace and Local Administration supported the idea. The organizers hope that the Tiger’s day can address the problem of depopulation of this animal. In the Far East only 450 units are left.
This year the guest of the holiday was Nikolay Drozdov, the chairman of the WWF council of trustees in Russia. According to his words, tiger is a symbol to unite the efforts of those who have a concern in wildlife. This Monday Nikolay Drozdov participated in the round work table discussing the issues of preserving the Amur tiger. Thinking about the means of preserving tiger he said: - If we want to preserve the Amur tiger first the Mongolian oak and the Korean cedar need to be registered in the Red Book of the Primorsky region. The main prey of tigers is boars that eat acorns and nuts. As far as the forest fires and deforestation in the south of the region have destroyed these kinds of trees, the boars fled from the south to the north. According to Nikolay Drozdov, the problem of poaching is still acute in our region and every one who orders the hunters to get the tiger’s skin should pay a big price to the government to afford this luxury.
